26th Biennial International Conference
The Asian Association for Biology Education (India Chapter) in association with Vidya Prabodhini College, Parvari –Goa organised 26th Biennial Conference “Trends in Biology Education and Research: Practices and Challenges”
26th Biennial International Conference of the Asian Association for Biology Education (India in association with Vidya Prabodhini College of Commerce, Education, Computer & Management, Parvari- Goa organised at the International Centre, Goa, during 20th to 24th September, 2016. The objectives of the conference were to bring together teachers and researchers engaged in biology education from different countries on a common platform to cooperate, share and evolve ways to continue to work together; to create awareness among biology teachers and researchers about AABE including its aims and activities through series of conferences; to provide an opportunity for exchange of ideas on best curricular practices as well as practices that highlight how to deal with current challenges, to suggest/develop suitable pedagogy and compile new resources for effective curriculum delivery; to generate awareness about the use of modern techniques employable in teaching and learning; to develop methods to enhance awareness of issues related to environment conservation, health and hygiene and to create a network of biology teachers & scientists across the Asia-Pacific, in order to continue the exchange of ideas that get discussed during this conference.
The conference started with Pre-conference Workshop held at International Centre Goa and Dhempe College of Arts and Science, Miramar-Panaji Goa. Honourable Chief Minister of Goa, Shri. Laxmikant Parsekar, inaugurated the conference. He said that an academic event like this is very essential where experts from the field of biology education meet and share their work with others. He told that teachers have to work hard to acquire latest changes and innovations in their respective discipline and Prof. H.A. Ranganath, Ex-Director of NAAC delivered a Key Note Address. Dr. Narendra Deshmukh, Scientific Officer, Dr. Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education- TIFR, Mumbai, International Executive Member–AABE, and Executive Director-26th AABE Conference, Dr. Nirankush Khubalkar, President, AABE, India Chapter, Prof. Suhas Godse, Convenor, of 26th AABE Conference and HOD, Dept. of Biotech. Dhempe College, Miramar, Goa, Dr. M.R. Patil, Principal, and Dr. Sukhaji G. Naik, Vice Principal, Vidya Prabodhini College, Parvari, Goa along with other dignitaries and delegates were present for the inaugural function.
The conference plenary talks and scientific sessions were held. The total 150 delegates from different countries like India, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, participated and presented research papers at the International Conference. Dr. Geetha Iyer and Prof. Asha Gupta organised workshop for the delegates participating in the workshop. Poster presentations were also held on the last day of the workshop. Himedia Laboratories organised a presentation for the delegates participating in the conference.
For the Valedictory function of the conference Prof. Bhaskar Nayak, Director, Directorate of Higher Education, Govt of Goa and Principal Govt. College, Quepem was the Chief Guest and Shri Dnyaneshwar P. Pednekar, Jt. Secretary, Prabodhan Education Society’s Vidya Prabodhini College Parvari-Goa was the Guest of Honour. Shri. Dnyaneshwar P. Pednekar thanked all the members of the organising committee and delegates for providing an opportunity to organise an international conference. He said that continuous work and efforts are required to organise an event of this nature. He also appreciated the efforts taken by the entire team of Vidya Prabodhini College in making this conference successful. Prof. Bhaskar Nayak expressed his happiness to be part of this International Conference. He said that University and College teachers are appointed after clearing eligibility tests conducted by different Higher Education Institutions and they are not provided with any kind of orientation training. This type of Conferences certainly provide training to the teachers working in different Universities, Colleges and Higher Education Institutions. He expressed his full support to any academic event organized in the State of Goa which contributes to the academic development.
